new calling and I need HELP!
So my new calling is the Relief Society music director yay not really. Ok first I have no idea what i am doing i have been in choir and i can sing decent enuf but to make me lead the music every week oh man i suck really bad. Well any way so we have to do our five minute music time in Relief Society and I am completly out of ideas of what to do for that time any help or ideas would be great or if you remember any thing you did for your practice hymn or 5 min music time that stood out to you let me know. All I know is they want me to do more then sing hymns we just don't know. Any thing would be useful I am sure of it.

Okay, Jess. So I haven't had this calling before, but I have noticed what others have done, so here is my tip. A lot of times the music lady just picks a song that is not sung very often or one that goes along with the lesson and then reads the words (not singing) and talks about what the song is about and how the hymn can touch our lives. Then they might have everyone open to the suggested scripture that is located at the bottom of each page in the hymnbook that goes along with the song. Also, one lady in my ward had this really neat book. It is called Our Latter Day Hymns: The Stories and Messages, and it is by Karen Lynn Davidson. You can get it online at seagullbook.com. Just use the site's search engine. Anyway, it is a really cool book. It has all of the stories of where each hymn came from, and the stories are interesting and sometimes really amazing and faith-building. Our music lady would just read the story of how the hymn came about and talked about its message. It was great. I really liked it. So get that book. It is 22.95, but I bet that your ward would buy it and let it be used for future music ladies too.

There are scripture references at the bottom of the pages in the hymn book. You could always pick a song and refer to the scriptural reference. You could also look up some information about the person who wrote the song or what was going on in the church during the time that a particular song was written. Call me. I would love to help. I've never had this calling but I was primary chorister for 2-3 years. We might be able to come up with something. Loves!
Ew, good luck with that. I can't lead music and I'm definitely not creative. I wish I could help but I've got nothin'. I'm sure you'll do awesome!
OH my gosh you sound like me! I got that calling in our old ward in Rexburg and I still felt that way after having it for a year. It was so new to me! Like you, I sang my whole life but never led music so I had to completely learn EVERYTHING! It was hard for me. But I'm glad I had it now, because now if someone asks me to lead I'm not all nervous. :) As far as the enrichment hymns and stuff go, I was never good at thinking of things to do either. Luckilly I was in a ward that didn't care much about it, so most of the time I just did a hymn that would go along with the lesson but every once in a while I would ask someone to bear their testimony about the topic, or I would, or I'd read a scripture or two that would go along with it. You could even find a song you like (not a hymn) and print off music for everyone and teach them the song, play it on a CD player, teach everyone a song they don't know well. Sometimes I did a song from the Primary Childrens Songbook. You know...switch it up. OKay this was a long comment... :)

So I was just released from this calling so I'll share my ideas. My best one is to ask the Primary Chorister for a list of the songs that the primary will be learning this year. They should learn one a month in preparation for their primary program. So teach your RS the song that their kids are learning. That takes care of one Sunday a month. Invite a sister in your ward to pick her favorite hymn and share why it's her favorite and then sing it. Us the book Our Latter Day Hymns (I just got it from the library) to share some interesting stories. Invite people to do a musical#. I had the YW come and do a song they were working on for one of their programs. Play a song from a CD that corresponds with the Lesson.

hey jess!! I will be seeing you in a couple days..I'm way excited!! anyways...in cedar they would teach us a couple notes or things found on a sheet of music...that was actually pretty interesting...glad thats you and not me!! jk
